IR MACHINE
Secad decided to purchase an FTIR in order to improve the quality of our laboratory analyses.
Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy is an analysis method for identifying materials by analysing the vibrations of chemical bonds. From the analysis of materials, spectra are produced that can provide both quantitative and qualitative information.
The wavelengths absorbed by the sample are characteristic of the functional groups present in the sample and the intensity is an indication of the concentration of the functional group responsible for absorption.
After initial trials to familiarise ourselves with the instrument, we started to create our own database of the most commonly used adhesives, additives and substrates at Secad with the aim of using a much more scientific approach to ensure greater quality and control of our raw materials and production processes.
Although it is one of the latest tools we have received, it has already been useful in explaining certain phenomena that would also have remained unexplained without it.
Database construction will be long and time-consuming, but it is from laying the first brick that a building is constructed.
